Ulrichen is a village and former municipality in the district of Goms. It lies in the upper Rhone valley of the canton of Valais in Switzerland and belongs to the German-speaking region of the Upper Valais. The settlement is traditionally alpine in character, with mountain pastures, compact village core and architecture typical of the Goms valley.

Geographic and cultural character

Ulrichen occupies a position in the high valley known as Goms and functions as a local centre for surrounding hamlets and alpine farms. The landscape around the village includes steep slopes, seasonal meadows and access to hiking and winter-sport routes. Local culture reflects Valais traditions: seasonal pastoral practices, village festivals and use of timber-framed houses in older parts of the village.

Administrative history

Historically Ulrichen was an independent municipality (former municipality) within the district of Goms, in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. On 1 January 2009 the neighbouring municipalities of Obergesteln and Oberwald joined Ulrichen to create the new municipality of Obergoms. The merger aimed to streamline local administration and pool resources for services and tourism promotion.

Importance and activities

Ulrichen today is valued for rural tourism, access to alpine trails and its role in preserving valley traditions. Visitors are drawn to walking routes, simple guest accommodations and the quiet village atmosphere. The administrative link to Obergoms connects Ulrichen to a larger municipal structure while its village identity remains evident in local events and built heritage.
