The genre emerged in and around Bristol in England, where a local cluster of producers, DJs and musicians developed a distinctive sound later called the "Bristol sound." Early pioneers blended local reggae and dub traditions with US hip hop sampling and the UK club scene. The group often credited with bringing this style to wider attention is Massive Attack, whose early work helped set the template for the scene.
