Trematodes (flukes) are parasitic flatworms in the phylum Platyhelminthes. Most have complex life cycles with snail intermediate hosts and vertebrate definitive hosts and include medically important species.

Trematodes, commonly called flukes, are parasitic flatworms placed in the class Trematoda within the larger group of flatworms. They belong to the phylum Platyhelminthes and are obligate internal parasites of a wide range of animals. Many trematodes require at least two hosts to complete development, and they are best known for their complex life cycles and significant effects on human and animal health.

Morphology and biology

Adult trematodes are typically dorsoventrally flattened and lack a body cavity. They attach to host tissues using one or more muscular suckers and have a protective tegument adapted for resisting host defenses. Reproductive strategies vary: many species are hermaphroditic while others, notably blood flukes, have separate sexes. The group includes both small intestinal forms and larger organ-specific parasites.

Life cycle and hosts

Most trematodes undergo multi-stage life cycles that alternate between an intermediate invertebrate host and a vertebrate definitive host. The intermediate host is commonly a freshwater snail, and the definitive host is usually a vertebrate. Key stages found in many digenean trematodes include:

  • Eggs released from the definitive host
  • Free-swimming miracidia that infect the snail
  • Sporocysts and rediae that amplify within the snail
  • Cercariae that leave the snail and either directly infect the final host or form encysted metacercariae in a second host or on vegetation

Human and veterinary importance

Several trematodes are of major public health or economic concern. Control often targets sanitation, food preparation, and the aquatic snail hosts.

Taxonomy and diversity

The class includes thousands of described species; conservative estimates place the number of species in the tens of thousands. Most described trematodes belong to the Digenea, a subgroup characterized by complex life cycles, while other smaller groups such as the Aspidogastrea have simpler associations. Public health approaches combine chemotherapy for infected hosts, improvements in sanitation and water management, and, where feasible, snail control.
