Teresa Ellen Gorman (née Moore; 30 September 1931 – 28 August 2015) was a British politician who served as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Billericay from 1987 until she stood down in 2001. Born in Putney, London, she represented a constituency in the county of Essex in England.

Early life and background

Gorman's early life in south-west London and the details of her pre-parliamentary career are part of her wider public biography. She entered national politics relatively late in life and developed a public image shaped more by her parliamentary conduct and media appearances than by a long record of prior public office. Her background and personal history informed a pragmatic, often combative approach to political debate.

Parliamentary career

Elected at the 1987 general election, Gorman held her seat across three subsequent parliaments before leaving the House of Commons in 2001. During her time in Westminster she was known as an independent-minded backbencher who did not always conform to party orthodoxy. She took a direct style in constituency work and national commentary, which kept her a visible figure both locally and in national media.

Views, style and public profile

Throughout her parliamentary service Gorman became noted for outspoken remarks and for taking positions that occasionally brought her into conflict with colleagues and commentators. While frequently identified with mainstream Conservative concerns of the period, she developed a reputation for plain speaking and for prioritising constituency interests. That forthright approach both attracted supporters and generated controversy.
