Tenna — former municipality in Graubünden, Switzerland

Geography and character

Located in a side valley of the greater Surselva area, Tenna occupied a high valley terrace surrounded by steep slopes and seasonal grazing land. The landscape combines mixed forests, stone and timber architecture, and panoramic views common to the Alps of southeastern Switzerland. The village layout and local infrastructure reflected its rural, mountainous setting.

History and municipal change

Like many small Swiss communities, Tenna experienced administrative change in the early 21st century. On 1 January 2013 the former municipalities of Tenna, Valendas, Versam and Safien were consolidated to create the new municipality of Safiental. Such mergers are part of broader efforts to streamline local government and pool resources for services.

Economy and local life

The local economy historically centered on alpine agriculture, livestock grazing and forestry, supplemented more recently by small-scale tourism and outdoor recreation. Visitors are drawn to the area for hiking, quiet countryside experiences and the cultural atmosphere of a small mountain community.

Culture and notable facts

Tenna shared the bilingual and multicultural heritage common to Graubünden, where Romansh and German linguistic traditions coexist. Although it no longer exists as an independent municipality, Tenna’s village, architecture and landscape remain part of the Safiental municipality and continue to contribute to the region’s rural character and tourism appeal.
