Tema is a coastal city on the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic coast of Ghana. It lies about 25 kilometres east of the capital city Accra and had a recorded population of 161,612 in 2013. Historically a fishing settlement, Tema was deliberately transformed into a planned harbour and industrial town to serve Ghana’s expanding trade and manufacturing needs in the mid‑20th century.

Origins and development

Tema was developed as a model town around a deepwater port and an industrial estate, using zoning and numbered residential "Communities" to separate living areas from heavy industry. The planned approach attracted factories, warehousing and port‑related services and made the city distinct from many organically grown urban areas in the region. Over subsequent decades the town and harbour experienced periodic upgrades and new facilities to handle containerised trade.

Layout and principal areas

  • Port and harbour terminals — a major southern gateway for container and bulk shipping, with facilities serving imports and exports.
  • Tema Industrial Area — clusters of manufacturing, processing and distribution companies, including petroleum storage and related services.
  • Numbered residential Communities and neighbourhoods — planned housing, markets, schools and community amenities.
  • Free zones and logistics precincts — intended to encourage export‑oriented industry and warehousing.

Economy and transport

Tema’s economy centers on its seaport and the industries that rely on maritime trade. The harbour handles container traffic and bulk goods and links Ghana to international shipping routes. Road connections such as the Accra–Tema corridor and rail links support freight movements inland; these transport corridors make Tema a national logistics hub and a focus for investment in trade infrastructure.

Demographics, culture and governance

The city is home to a culturally diverse population drawn by employment opportunities. Local life includes markets, schools, sporting and social clubs and community organisations. Tema is administered within Ghana’s municipal system, and local authorities manage services, planning and economic development while responding to pressures from urban growth.

Challenges and outlook

Tema faces common coastal and industrial challenges such as environmental management, coastal erosion, pollution control and the need to maintain infrastructure. Planning authorities and port operators continue to work on upgrades, environmental mitigation and improvements to transport links to support future growth. The city remains notable as a planned port and industrial centre that shaped modern Ghanaian trade and coastal urban development.
