Temecula is a city in southwestern Riverside County, California, in the United States. The city had a population of 100,097 at the 2010 census and has grown since as a suburban and tourism-oriented community. Temecula is widely known for the Temecula Valley wine region, a historic downtown area called Old Town Temecula, hot-air ballooning, and a major tribal resort and casino that contribute to the local economy.

Geography and climate

Temecula occupies a valley of rolling hills and oak-studded plateaus in southern Riverside County near the border with San Diego County. The area experiences a Mediterranean-style climate: warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. These conditions support vineyards and year-round outdoor activities. Major roads such as Interstate 15 provide direct connections to coastal and inland metropolitan areas, making Temecula a regional crossroads for commuters and visitors.

History

The Temecula area was long inhabited by the Luiseño people before European contact. During the Spanish and Mexican periods the land was organized into ranchos, and later the valley supported ranching, orchards and agriculture under American settlement. The modern city was incorporated on December 1, 1989; local histories and archival materials document the transition from rural valley to a growing suburban and tourism center (historical sources).

Economy, tourism and culture

Viticulture and wine tourism are central to Temecula's economy, anchored by numerous wineries and tasting rooms in the Temecula Valley. Old Town Temecula preserves late 19th- and early 20th-century storefronts and is a focal point for shopping, dining and special events. The regional economy also includes retail, hospitality, construction and a tribal resort that provides employment and entertainment opportunities. Annual events often highlight wine, food, ballooning and community celebrations.

Community, services and recreation

Temecula offers a mix of planned residential neighborhoods, parks, golf courses and regional preserves. Public services include municipal government, schools and community facilities; visitors and residents consult official city and county resources for services and planning. Outdoor recreation ranges from hiking and equestrian trails to river corridors and organized festivals.
