Tegan and Sara
Tegan and Sara is a Canadian indie band consisting of the twin pair Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Keirsten Quin (born September 19, 1980 in Calgary, Alberta).
Band History
Tegan and Sara Quin were born identical twins in Calgary on September 19, 1980. When they were 15 years old, they started playing guitar and keyboard and writing songs.
During their high school years they formed the punk band Plunk, with whom they also recorded their first demo tapes, including Red Tape, and sold them at their high school. Two songs from the demo Red Tape were later released on their first album, Under Feet Like Ours. The album was initially released under the band name "Sara and Tegan", but they later changed the name to "Tegan and Sara", as this name is easier to speak and clearly different from artists who were successful at the time, such as Sarah McLachlan and Sarah Slean.
They achieved a breakthrough when they came to the attention of Neil Young in 2000 and signed them. At the same time, several of their songs were used in US series such as Grey's Anatomy and The L Word.
In 2002, they released their third album, If It Was You. Their fourth album, So Jealous, was released in 2004. Both albums were released on the Vapor and Sanctuary record labels. The track Walking with a Ghost was covered by The White Stripes.
In 2007, the album The Con was released on the Vapor and Sire record labels, as Sanctuary refrained from further releases in the US. The Con and So Jealous were awarded a Gold Record in February 2009 by CRIA, the Canadian music industry advocacy group, for each selling 50,000 copies in Canada.
The sixth studio album Sainthood was released in 2009. The album reflects stories, experiences and essays experienced by the band during their fall 2008 tour of the U.S. and Australia. Sainthood sold over 40,000 copies in Canada and was awarded a gold record.
NOFX dedicated the song "Creeping Out Sara" to the sisters.
In November 2011, the live CD/DVD Get Along was released. Get Along was nominated for the Grammy in the category "Best Music Long Video".
On 29 January 2013, the album Heartthrob was released in the USA and Canada. The album was also available in Germany since 8 February. In early fall 2013, the group had an extensive UK tour together with Waxahatchee. In Canada, Heartthrob was awarded a gold record for over 40,000 copies sold.
In October 2017, Tegan and Sara celebrated the tenth anniversary of their album The Con with an unusual project: fourteen highly diverse musicians each covered a song from the album. All proceeds from The Con X: Covers went entirely to the Tegan and Sara Foundation, which works for "economic justice, health, and the representation of LGBTQ girls and women."
Private life
Both live openly homosexual lives. Tegan lives in Vancouver and Los Angeles and Sara lives in Los Angeles with her friend Stacy Reader.
