Overview

The Bavarian State Opera (German: Bayerische Staatsoper) is one of Europe's leading opera companies. Based in Munich, it traces its institutional origins to the 17th century and today presents a broad operatic repertoire on stages across the city. The company is closely linked to the Bavarian State Orchestra (Bayerisches Staatsorchester), which serves as its principal pit ensemble.

Venues and ensembles

The company's primary home is the National Theatre Munich on Max-Joseph-Platz, where many of its main productions and premieres are staged. In addition, the ensemble gives performances at the Prinzregententheater, a large venue completed in 1901, and occasionally at other houses and festival sites. The organization also collaborates with the Bavarian State Ballet and maintains educational and outreach programs for young audiences.

History and development

Founded as a court opera company in 1653, the institution evolved through centuries of changing musical styles, political regimes and architectural rebuildings to become a public, state-funded opera house. Its long history includes premieres and performances of works by composers associated with Munich and Bavaria, and it has been rebuilt and renovated repeatedly following fires and wartime damage. Over time the company expanded its repertoire from baroque and classical opera to romantic, verismo and contemporary works.

Repertoire, productions and importance

The Bavarian State Opera is noted for a wide-ranging repertoire: from Mozart and Gluck to Wagner and Richard Strauss, and including twentieth- and twenty-first-century works. It mounts both traditional stagings and new, often internationally collaborative productions. The house plays an important cultural role in Munich through regular seasons, touring projects and the annual Munich Opera Festival, which showcases highlights and premieres.

Leadership and notable figures

The company has attracted prominent artistic leaders and conductors. Peter Jonas served as General Director beginning in 1993 and was widely noted as the first British head of a major German-speaking opera house. In the music direction the company has worked with Zubin Mehta and Kent Nagano, among others; more recent decades have seen further internationally recognized conductors lead productions. Singers, directors and designers from across the globe appear regularly at the house, contributing to its international reputation.
