Conventionally the formula comprises three numbers separated by hyphens: a-b-c. These numbers list the count of tarsomeres on the front (prothoracic), middle (mesothoracic) and hind (metathoracic) legs respectively. For example, 5-5-4 indicates five tarsomeres on the fore leg, five on the middle leg and four on the hind leg. Counting is done from the base of the tarsus (proximal) toward the claw (distal).
