Because a superphylum sits above the level of phylum and below subkingdom (subregnum), it serves as an intermediate category in hierarchical accounts. Authors sometimes refer to it as a taxonomic grade or informal clade; its application varies with the author and the data available. Molecular phylogenetics during the late 20th and early 21st centuries led to renewed use of such groupings as researchers sought to reflect deep evolutionary relationships.

Examples and context

In animal studies, several large groupings are commonly called superphyla. These are intended to gather phyla that share key developmental, anatomical, or genetic traits.

• Ecdysozoa — phyla that molt an external cuticle (includes arthropods and nematodes).
• Lophotrochozoa — a diverse assembly defined by larval or feeding structures (includes molluscs and annelids).
• Deuterostomia — a major lineage including chordates and echinoderms.

Use of the label is most common in the animal kingdom but may appear in other groups when authors wish to emphasize broad common descent. Because the term remains informal, alternative classifications may prefer clade names without introducing a formal rank.

In practice, the superphylum concept helps communicate large-scale evolutionary patterns, guide comparative biology, and structure instructional material, while remaining flexible as new data revise relationships.
