Sultan Ahmed (6 June 1953 – 4 September 2017) was an Indian politician from Kolkata who served at both state and national levels. Best known for his term as Union Minister of State for Tourism and for representing the Uluberia constituency in the 15th Lok Sabha, Ahmed was active in West Bengal politics across several decades. He was associated with the Indian National Congress early in his career and later contested national elections on a Trinamool Congress ticket.

Early life and political beginnings

Born in Kolkata, Ahmed entered public life in state politics. While detailed public records of his education and early professional life are limited in widely available sources, his electoral history shows a steady rise from state legislature to the national parliament. He served multiple terms in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly before moving to the national stage.

Electoral record and party affiliations

Ahmed was elected twice as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Entally constituency, serving in the periods 1987–1991 and 1996–2001 as a candidate of the Indian National Congress. Later he joined the All India Trinamool Congress and was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha (2009–2014) from the Uluberia constituency in West Bengal. His shift from Congress to Trinamool reflects a pattern many regional politicians followed as West Bengal’s political landscape changed.

Government role and parliamentary work

During his term in the 15th Lok Sabha, Ahmed was appointed Union Minister of State for Tourism in the Council of Ministers. In that capacity he was involved in matters related to tourism promotion, policy discussions and initiatives aimed at enhancing India’s tourism profile. As a parliamentarian he participated in debates and represented constituency concerns at the national level.

Death and legacy

Sultan Ahmed died on 4 September 2017 at a hospital in Kolkata after suffering a cardiac arrest, at the age of 64. His passing was noted in regional and national outlets and remembered by colleagues across party lines. He is often cited as an example of a regional politician who served both in state assemblies and in the national parliament, and whose career spanned changing party alignments in West Bengal.
