Suisei — Japan's first interplanetary spacecraft (Halley's Comet probe)
Suisei was Japan's first interplanetary probe, launched in 1985 by ISAS to observe Halley's Comet in 1986. It carried ultraviolet and plasma instruments to study the comet's coma and solar wind interaction.
Overview
Suisei (すいせい) was an unmanned Japanese spacecraft flown as an interplanetary probe to study Halley’s Comet during its 1986 apparition. Launched on August 18, 1985, the mission represented Japan’s first deliberate venture beyond Earth orbit and was managed by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science under the auspices of the University of Tokyo. Suisei joined a coordinated international campaign of spacecraft and ground observatories that together provided a comprehensive view of the comet.

The spacecraft carried a compact science payload optimized for remote sensing and in situ plasma measurements. Key instruments included ultraviolet detectors to monitor hydrogen Lyman-alpha emissions from the coma, particle and plasma sensors to measure solar wind conditions and charged particles near the comet, and engineering systems for telemetry and radio tracking. The payload emphasized reliable measurements rather than high-resolution imaging, enabling focused studies of gas production and plasma processes.
Development and launch
Suisei was developed as a project of ISAS and complemented a small companion mission launched earlier that year. The unmanned probe was designed, tested and launched from Japan in 1985, using the launch facilities and vehicles available to ISAS at the time. The mission benefited from collaboration with international teams and coordination of observing schedules with other spacecraft visiting Halley.
Trajectory and encounter
After launch, cruise operations included instrument checkout, trajectory corrections and radio tracking. During the 1986 passage of Halley’s Comet, Suisei performed observations of the coma’s composition and of the interaction between the cometary atmosphere and the streaming solar wind. Data were returned to Earth for analysis and combined with measurements from other missions to build a multi-instrument picture of the cometary environment.
Scientific results and legacy
Suisei provided valuable ultraviolet and plasma data that contributed to the understanding of volatile release, coma structure and plasma phenomena around comets. The mission demonstrated Japan’s capability to design and operate an interplanetary spacecraft and helped establish technical and scientific foundations for later national missions. Its findings appear alongside other mission reports in institutional archives and historical summaries.
