Modern stockings are most commonly produced from synthetic fibers such as nylon or blends that include elastane (also called spandex) for stretch. • Sport stockings: in some team sports, durable over-the-calf stockings (sometimes called stockings) form part of the uniform; they differ in purpose and fabric from fashion hosiery and are used alongside other uniform components such as socks and pads.
