Basse, commonly called Basse Santa Su, is both a town and an administrative Local Government Area in the eastern part of the Republic of the Gambia. It is one of eight Local Government Areas in the country and serves as a local commercial and transport centre in the region. The area covered by the LGA is about 2,069.5 square kilometres, and the population was recorded at roughly 240,000 in 2013.

Geography and settlement

The Basse area occupies the far eastern portion of the country, with a landscape of savanna, agricultural fields and scattered villages. The town of Basse lies along the main east–west road that links it with other Gambian towns; its position makes it a gateway between central Gambia and neighbouring regions to the east. Smaller settlements and farming communities are distributed throughout the LGA.

Population and society

The population is diverse and predominantly rural, with a mix of ethnic groups commonly found in the Gambia. Local life centers on farming, market trade and family networks. Languages such as Mandinka, Fula and Wolof are widely spoken alongside English, the country’s official language.

Economy and infrastructure

Agriculture is the primary economic activity in the Basse LGA, supplemented by market trade, small-scale commerce and services in the town. Basse town hosts periodic markets and functions as a distribution point for goods moving across the eastern corridor. Basic public services, local health centres and schools serve the LGA, though access to infrastructure can vary between the town and outlying villages.

Administration, history and notable facts

Administratively, the area is structured into smaller districts and wards that manage local affairs. Historically, Basse grew as a regional market hub and continues to play a role in overland trade and local governance. • Key features: regional market town, agricultural hinterland, transport link in the east.
  • Distinction: Basse refers both to the town (market centre) and the wider Local Government Area.

Basse remains an important local centre within the Gambia’s eastern region, balancing traditional rural livelihoods with the administrative and commercial functions of the town.
