Splendour in the Grass is an annual open‑air music festival held in mid‑winter (July) at the North Byron Parklands, located in Yelgun, about 30 km from Byron Bay in New South Wales, Australia. The event gathers Australian and international artists across multiple genres and attracts festivalgoers from around the country and overseas.

History

The festival began as a single‑day event in 2001 and was expanded to span two days the following year, in 2002. Since then it has developed into one of Australia’s better‑known contemporary music gatherings, with a programme that typically includes several stages, headline acts, and supporting talent.

Timing and site

Splendour in the Grass is usually scheduled in July at the dedicated festival site of North Byron Parklands in Yelgun. The venue lies roughly 30 km from the coastal town of Byron Bay and is arranged to accommodate camping, multiple performance areas and onsite amenities for attendees.

Scale and attendance

Attendance has grown since the festival’s inception. For example, in 2012 more than 20,000 people attended. Capacity and ticketing arrangements have varied over the years as the organisers adjusted the event to meet demand and local planning conditions.
