The spinning jenny is an early multi-spindle spinning machine that dramatically increased the amount of yarn a single worker could produce. Design and operation

The machine retained the basic principle of hand spinning but multiplied it. Instead of one spindle and one flyer, the spinning jenny mounted several spindles on a single frame. A worker drew out fibres and turned a wheel to twist and wind thread onto each spindle. Because the thread drawn by the jenny tended to be finer and less strong than thread produced by later water-powered machines, it was often suitable for weft (crosswise) yarn rather than the stronger warp yarn used for warp threads on a loom.

Economic and social impact

By increasing productivity and cutting the cost of thread, the spinning jenny contributed to cheaper cloth and expanded textile markets. It enabled larger-scale operations and helped shift production into centralized workshops and eventually factories. The new technology also provoked social tensions: some hand spinners and textile workers feared job loss and low wages, and instances of resistance against mechanization occurred as communities adjusted to changing labor patterns.

Contested claims and legacy
