A slurry is a mixture in which solid particles are dispersed in a liquid so that the solids remain at least partially suspended. Environmental concerns arise when large volumes (for example, mine tailings) are stored in ponds or impoundments, requiring careful design and monitoring.
Distinctions and notable facts
Although often used interchangeably with “suspension” or “paste,” a slurry typically implies a higher solid fraction than a dilute suspension but remains flowable—unlike a stiff paste. The term is broad and spans many scales, from fine colloidal dispersions to mixtures with sand-size particles. Understanding a slurry’s rheology is essential to predict behavior in pumps, mixers and pipelines and to design effective separation and disposal strategies.
