Six World Trade Center

Design and functions

Designed to complement the scale and form of the complex, Six World Trade Center shared the modernist aesthetic of the site and housed offices, customs processing facilities, and related administrative services. As the U.S. Customs House it handled documentation and enforcement tasks associated with imports and international trade that arrived through New York’s ports, and provided public counters and secure office space for federal agencies.

History and fate

Opened in 1973, the building was part of the commercial renewal of Lower Manhattan and remained in federal use for nearly three decades. On September 11, 2001, Six World Trade Center suffered catastrophic damage when the nearby North Tower collapsed during the terrorist attacks. The collapse and ensuing fires left the structure badly damaged and contaminated with rubble and dust, making repair impractical.

Demolition and aftermath

Following emergency response and site stabilization, Six World Trade Center was demolished later in 2001 as part of the broader cleanup and recovery of the World Trade Center site. Its removal was necessary to allow search, recovery, debris removal, and eventual reconstruction efforts on the footprint of the complex. Portions of material and records were recovered and processed by investigators and agency personnel.

Legacy and notable facts

Six World Trade Center is remembered principally for its role as the federal customs facility within the original World Trade Center and for its destruction during the events of September 11, 2001. The loss of the building contributed to the scale of the recovery task in Lower Manhattan and influenced planning for the rebuilt complex and memorial.
