The Shikoku is a medium-sized, spitz-type dog that originated on the island of Shikoku in Japan. Bred originally as a hunting companion for boar and deer, the breed combines agility, endurance and a strong prey drive. It is one of Japan's native breeds and is often called Shikoku Inu or Shikoku Ken in English-language sources.
Appearance and characteristics
Shikoku dogs have a well-muscled, compact build with erect ears, almond-shaped eyes and a curled tail carried over the back. Their coat is a harsh, straight outer layer with a softer undercoat that provides weather resistance. Typical coat colors include sesame (red hairs with black-tipped guard hairs), red and black-and-tan. The overall look is frequently compared to that of the Japanese wolf on account of its alert expression and lithe proportions.
Temperament and behavior
Temperamentally, Shikoku are intelligent, loyal and independent. They can be reserved toward strangers but form strong bonds with their family. Early socialization and consistent, reward-based training are important because the breed retains strong hunting instincts and can be willful. They require regular exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom-related behaviors.
History and development
The breed developed in the mountainous regions of central Shikoku where local villagers relied on agile dogs to assist with hunting in rough terrain. Over generations, selection favored endurance, sharp senses and a cooperative but tenacious working style. The Shikoku is distinct from other Japanese breeds such as the larger Tosa; the two are separate in origin and purpose.
Uses, care and health
Traditionally used as a hunting dog, today the Shikoku also serves as a companion, show dog and working breed. Owners should provide firm, consistent training, ample exercise and exposure to different people and animals. Lifespan is commonly reported at around 10–12 years. Like many medium breeds, they may be susceptible to routine canine health issues such as joint conditions, so veterinary check-ups and sensible weight management are advisable.
