Overview

Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas is a province in the Republic of Ecuador. Established in October 2007, it was formed from territory formerly administered by the province of Pichincha. The province takes its name from its capital city and from the Tsáchila, an indigenous people long associated with the area.

Geography and environment

The province lies in the western transition zone between the Andean highlands and the coastal lowlands. This location produces a mix of rolling hills, river valleys and low mountain ridges with a generally warm, humid climate at lower elevations and milder conditions toward the higher ground. The zone is important for river catchments and as a corridor connecting inland and coastal regions.

History and administration

Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas gained provincial status following a political and administrative process that separated parts of Pichincha province. As a modern administrative unit it is governed through provincial institutions and a number of cantonal municipalities. The creation of the province was intended to improve local governance and direct resources to a rapidly growing population and economy.

Economy and transport

The province serves as a regional hub for commerce and transport owing to its position along major roads that link the capital region with the coast. Agriculture, livestock and agroindustry are important economic activities: farms produce tropical and subtropical crops, and trade and services support the urban population. Infrastructure and marketplace activity around the capital concentrate much of the province's economic life.

People, culture and notable facts

The population is culturally diverse, with a majority of mestizo residents and a visible presence of the Tsáchila people. The Tsáchila are known for distinctive customs; traditionally some men used annatto (achiote) to dye their hair and skin, a practice that contributed to the historic nickname "Colorados." Local festivals, handicrafts and culinary traditions reflect a blend of indigenous and mestizo influences.

Administrative features and significance
