Santa Clara County is a populous county in the San Francisco Bay Area of the state of California, United States. It serves as a regional center for commerce, research and culture. The county seat and largest city is San Jose, which functions as the area's administrative and economic hub. According to the 2010 census, the population was 1,781,642; since then the county's population and economy have continued to expand, and its size is comparable to that of many U.S. states.

Geography and communities

Santa Clara County occupies the broad Santa Clara Valley and reaches from the San Francisco Bay shore into surrounding mountain ranges. Its landscape includes urban centers, suburban neighborhoods, agricultural parcels and protected open space. Major cities and incorporated communities include:

History and development
