Map of Azerbaijan showing Salyan District

Overview: Salyan District, known in Azerbaijani as Salyan rayonu, is an administrative district in southeastern Azerbaijan. Its administrative centre is the city of Salyan, positioned on the lower course of the Kura River. The district lies near the Caspian Sea and can be located roughly at coordinates shown here: 39°35′N 49°00′E.

Geography and environment

The district occupies lowland steppe and deltaic landscapes formed by the Kura River. Soils and seasonal wetlands support irrigated agriculture and reed beds. Much of the protected area of Shirvan National Park falls within the raion; this park preserves semi-desert habitat and wetlands important for migratory birds and native fauna.

Administration and settlements

Salyan is governed as a raion, a common post-Soviet administrative unit; see raion for context. The district combines urban settlements, villages and farming communities, with local centres providing services, markets and transport links to larger regional cities.

Economy and land use

Economic activity includes irrigated agriculture (cotton, grains, vegetables), fishing and cattle raising on floodplain pastures. Energy-sector developments and small oil and gas fields in the broader region have influenced local employment and infrastructure. River transport, roads and irrigation systems are locally important.

History and significance

Historically the area has been part of trade and pastoral routes across the South Caucasus, influenced by Persian, Turkic and Russian administrations over centuries. Today Salyan District is valued for its agricultural output, ecological sites in Shirvan National Park and its role as a regional administrative centre.
