Political and government career

In the immediate aftermath of the 1979 revolution Tabatabaei held senior offices in the provisional state. He served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1979 to 1980 and acted as Deputy Minister of the Interior during the same period. In that capacity he played a role in organizing and overseeing the March 1979 referendum that asked the Iranian people to confirm the future form of government. These responsibilities placed him among the group of officials shaping Iran's initial post‑revolution institutions and policies.

Diplomatic service

After his early domestic roles he moved into diplomacy. Tabatabaei was appointed Iran’s Ambassador to Germany and served in that post from 1982 until 1986.
