Overview

Sadarak (Azerbaijani: Sədərək) is a raion (district) of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (Nakhchivan), an exclave of Azerbaijan. The district lies at the northwestern edge of Nakhchivan and forms part of the region's external borderlands. Its administrative centre is the town commonly called Sədərək, sometimes referred to in official sources as Heydarabad.

Geography and administration

Sadarak occupies a strategic position where Nakhchivan meets both Turkey and Armenia. Its terrain is characteristic of the Transcaucasian borderlowlands and foothills, and its location has made it an important local transit and customs area. For map reference see coordinates.

History and development

The district was formed in 1990 when it was separated from the former Ilyich raion (now Sharur). Its modern administrative boundaries and institutions date from the final years of the Soviet period and the early years of Azerbaijani independence. The district's development has been shaped by its border position and by the regional conflicts of the late 20th century.

Karki exclave and border issues

Sadarak contains an Azerbaijani exclave, the village of Karki (Karki), which lies inside the internationally recognized territory of Armenia. Karki came under Armenian control in May 1992 during the fighting associated with the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. Its status has remained a sensitive and practical issue for local communities and authorities on both sides of the border.

Economy, transport and local life

The district economy is primarily agricultural, with local market towns serving surrounding villages. Cross-border trade, customs and transit facilities are important where roads meet the Turkish and Armenian frontiers. Public services, education and healthcare are concentrated in the administrative centre, while smaller settlements rely on regional links to Nakhchivan City and other districts.

Notable facts and distinctions

  • Sadarak was established as a separate administrative unit in 1990 after a subdivision of the former Ilyich raion.
  • The presence of the Karki exclave highlights the complex territorial arrangements left by Soviet-era internal borders.
  • The district's border location gives it strategic and economic importance for the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
