History and development

The center began in 1916 when the Hayes family and local supporters created a library and museum to safeguard the papers and possessions of the late president. Its library has been described as the first institution established specifically to serve as a presidential library, predating the later system of presidential libraries administered by the National Archives. The property evolved over the 20th century as new buildings and conservation measures were added to protect the collections.
