History

The site that became Fremont was originally occupied by Indigenous peoples and later grew as a riverine trading and transport point in the 19th century. Early maps and records show a settlement called Lower Sandusky; in the mid-1800s the town was renamed Fremont, honoring the explorer John C. Frémont.
