Clarke rose from suburban beginnings in Melbourne, Victoria, to compete at the highest international level. He represented Australia at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, where he earned a bronze medal in the 10,000 metres in a memorable race that has been widely recounted in Olympic history. In the mid‑1960s he set numerous world records across a range of distances and was widely admired for his endurance, tactical pacing and high training mileage.
