Physical characteristics and behavior

Roborovskis are compact, quick rodents with sandy or mottled fur that serves as camouflage in their natural habitat. They are exceptionally fast runners and spend much of their time active and exploring. They are burrowing animals by nature, building complex tunnel systems in the wild. In captivity they are lively and curious, which makes them engaging to watch but more difficult to handle calmly than larger hamsters.

Habitat and origins

In the wild this species inhabits steppe and desert-edge terrain where temperatures can fluctuate and vegetation is sparse. Their adaptations include a tolerance for dry conditions and a tendency to nest below ground to escape heat and predators. The species name honors a Russian explorer associated with early natural history collections from Central Asia.

Care, housing and diet

Because of their small size and speed, Roborovskis require enclosures with very narrow bar spacing or solid sides to prevent escapes; traditional wire cages with wide bars are not suitable. Bedding and nesting material that allow burrowing, a solid-surface exercise wheel, tunnels and chew toys are important for physical and mental stimulation. Their diet is similar to other pet hamsters: a base of commercial seed or pellet mixes supplemented with small amounts of fresh vegetables and occasional protein. Fresh water must always be available.

Social behavior and handling

Unlike many larger hamsters, Roborovskis can be more social and often tolerate same-sex companions if introduced carefully and kept in sufficient space. However, they remain skittish and are not the best choice for owners seeking an easily hand-tamed pet. They are better suited to observation and enclosure enrichment than frequent handling.
