Robert Milton Cundick, Sr. (1926–2016) was an American church musician and composer best known for his long service as an organist at the Salt Lake Tabernacle and for compositions written for worship and the concert hall. A member of the Latter‑day Saint community, Cundick combined liturgical sensitivity with concert technique, contributing organ solos and accompaniments heard by national audiences on the weekly broadcast Music and the Spoken Word.

Early life and musical formation

Cundick was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1926. He pursued formal musical training and developed a reputation for competence at the organ, composition, and collaborative work with choirs and ensembles. Over his career he balanced responsibilities as a performing musician with composing works intended both for congregational use and for recital performance.

Career at the Tabernacle and broadcast work

For many years Cundick served as an organist at the Salt Lake Tabernacle and was associated with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, contributing organ solos and supportive accompaniment during services and recordings. His playing was regularly featured on the choir's weekly radio and television program, where his organ work reached a broad audience. He retired from active service at the Tabernacle in 1991.

Compositions and musical style

Cundick wrote works for organ, choir, and smaller ensembles as well as pieces intended for liturgical use. His music is typically melodic, respectful of traditional church idioms, and crafted for clear liturgical function while remaining suitable for concert presentation. Colleagues and listeners have noted the balance in his work between devotional purpose and musical craftsmanship.

Later life, service, and legacy

After retiring from the Tabernacle, Cundick and his wife served as Directors of Hosting at the BYU Jerusalem Center in Israel, where they welcomed visitors and supported educational activities. His involvement in both performance and service left a legacy in church music circles and among organists. Cundick passed away on January 7, 2016, at the age of 89.
