Architecture and acoustics

The Tabernacle is notable for its wide, column-free interior and a long-span roof created with timber and truss techniques available at the time. These design choices produce unusually clear acoustics: a speaker at the pulpit can be heard throughout the interior with very little electronic amplification. The hall also houses a large pipe organ and an auditorium-style arrangement of seating designed for congregational gatherings and musical performances.

Construction began in the 1860s when local craftsmen adapted shipbuilding and carpentry methods to achieve a broad, open roof.
