Richard John Garcia

Early life and priesthood

Garcia was born in San Francisco and pursued formation for the Catholic priesthood before beginning ministry in the church. Like many who become bishops, his early decades of service were spent in parish assignments and diocesan responsibilities that prepared him for broader leadership. He carried pastoral work into administrative and teaching roles typical of clergy who later receive episcopal appointment.

Episcopal appointment and ministry

On December 19, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Garcia as bishop of Monterey, and he was formally installed on January 30, 2007. He died on July 11, 2018 in Monterey of complications related to the illness at age 71. His passing prompted remembrances from the diocese and from clergy and laypeople who had ministered with him.
