Powers and functions

The president's constitutional powers combine ceremonial duties with several concrete authorities. Major functions include:

• representing Slovakia in foreign relations and accrediting ambassadors;
• serving as commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces;
• formally appointing the prime minister and, on proposal or in accordance with parliamentary majorities, other members of government;
• signing or returning legislation (a suspensive veto that can be overridden by parliament) and issuing executive instruments within constitutional limits;
• granting pardons, state decorations and honours;
• calling referenda and dissolving the National Council in limited circumstances specified by law.

Election, term and eligibility

The president is chosen by direct popular vote for a five-year term and may serve a maximum of two terms. Candidates must meet age and citizenship requirements laid down in the constitution. Direct elections emphasize democratic legitimacy and public accountability while giving the office a mandate distinct from the parliamentary majority.

History and notable facts

The modern office was created after the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, when Slovakia became an independent state. Since then the presidency has alternated between more ceremonially focused holders and presidents who have taken an active public role in political affairs. As of the most recent information the incumbent is Zuzana Čaputová, who took office in June 2019.
