Peter Gilmore (25 August 1931 – 3 February 2013) was a British actor whose career spanned stage, film and television. He became a household name in the 1970s for his lead role in the BBC period drama The Onedin Line, and he appeared in notable films including Oh! What a Lovely War and Warlords of Atlantis. Over several decades Gilmore was frequently cast as a commanding, romantic or roguish figure and remained active in theatre as well as screen work.

Early life and background

Gilmore was born in Leipzig to British parents on 25 August 1931 and grew up in the North Riding of Yorkshire. His early years in Britain shaped his accent and sensibilities, and he later settled in and around London for much of his professional life. Although born abroad, he was raised and educated in the United Kingdom and began his acting career in repertory theatre and repertory companies that were typical training grounds for post-war British actors.

Career highlights

Gilmore worked across several media. In cinema he had supporting and character roles in films of the 1960s and 1970s, while on television he won broad recognition for long-running dramatic parts. His most famous screen role was as Captain James Onedin, the central character of The Onedin Line, a seafaring family saga that ran on British television and established him as a leading man. He also appeared in the ensemble historical film Oh! What a Lovely War (1969) and in the fantasy-adventure film Warlords of Atlantis (1978).

Stage work and screen persona

Alongside film and TV credits, Gilmore continued to work in theatre, performing in plays that ranged from classics to contemporary works. His stage background contributed to the theatrical presence he brought to screen roles: intense eye contact, physical assurance and clear diction. Critics and audiences often noted his suitability for period dramas and for parts that required stern authority blended with vulnerability.

Personal life

Gilmore's personal life attracted public interest during and after his peak television years. He was married three times. His first marriage, to actress Una Stubbs, lasted from 1958 until their divorce in 1969 and produced one son. He later married Jan Waters (1970–1976), and in 1987 he married actress Anne Stallybrass; they remained together until his death. Gilmore died at his home in London on 3 February 2013, aged 81.
