Hamm wrote critical and documentary pieces on notable postwar authors, including programs and studies devoted to Ingeborg Bachmann and Peter Handke. Born in Munich (Munich), Hamm lived much of his life immersed in Germany's postwar literary scene. From 1970 until his death he was in a long-term partnership with the actress Marianne Koch. He died on 22 July 2019 in Tutzing. Hamm is remembered for bridging literary criticism and broadcast media and for spotlighting important authors of his generation through accessible documentary formats.
