Pekanbaru (Jawi: ڤكنبارو) is the capital city of Riau province, Indonesia. It is the third largest city on the island of Sumatra. It has an area of 632.26 square kilometres (244.12 square miles). As of 2014 about 1,030,732 people live there. Pekanbaru has several industries. It exports palm oil, paper and crude oil. It is a very clean city. Ferry passengers from Singapore used it as a transfer point before low-cost air travel became more popular.
