Pekanbaru is a transport hub for eastern Sumatra, with road links to surrounding regencies and facilities for domestic air services. In the past the city was used as a transfer point by ferry passengers travelling to and from Singapore, a role that diminished after the rise of low-cost air travel. Today the city combines its logistical role with efforts to improve urban services and cleanliness, maintaining its importance as Riau's political and commercial centre.
