Paul Newell Hester (8 January 1959 – 26 March 2005) was an Australian musician and well-known television personality. He gained international recognition as the drummer for the art-pop group Split Enz and as a founding member of the rock band Crowded House. Across the 1980s and 1990s he helped shape several recordings and performances that remain part of the Australasian rock canon.
Early life and musical career
Born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria, Hester began playing in local groups before joining established acts and touring professionally. His style combined solid timekeeping with occasional loose, expressive fills; he was often praised for his musical sympathy to songwriters and for contributing a lively stage presence. Alongside songwriting colleagues he participated in the bands' studio work and live shows during their most visible periods.
Style, roles and notable contributions
Hester's approach favored feel over flash: restrained drum parts that supported melody and swings that added warmth. He played standard drum kit setups and additional percussion when songs required. Among the roles he filled were:
- Backing and occasional lead vocal parts in live settings
- Studio drummer on several well-known recordings
- Performer on international tours and television appearances
Later career in media
After his most active years with major bands he moved into broadcasting and entertainment, appearing on Australian television and working in radio. These roles widened his public profile beyond the rock stage and showed a talent for conversation and light-hearted presenting. He also continued to perform occasionally with other musicians and at benefit concerts.
Personal life and death
Hester was a father of two daughters and was remembered by friends and family for his humour and generosity. In his later years he experienced mental health difficulties, including episodes of depression. On 26 March 2005 he died by suicide at the age of 46. His passing prompted public discussion in Australia about support for artists and the importance of mental health awareness.
Legacy
Paul Hester's contribution to Australian and international pop-rock is commemorated by fans and fellow musicians. He is often cited for his tasteful drumming and his role in two influential bands. Memorial concerts and tributes have reflected both his musical achievements and the impact of his loss on a generation of performers and listeners.
