An oil field is an area containing accumulations of petroleum that are developed with multiple wells, infrastructure, and recovery methods to produce hydrocarbons for energy and industry.

Overview

An oil field is a geographic area where hydrocarbons are extracted from subsurface reservoirs using many oil wells. These accumulations consist of petroleum trapped in porous rock beneath an impermeable layer. Because reservoirs often extend over wide distances — sometimes several hundred kilometres in extent — a mature field typically requires numerous wells and coordinated development to recover its resources effectively and safely.

Structure and components

Key elements of an oil field include the reservoir rock, source rock, trap and seal, wellbores, surface facilities and transport links. Reservoirs must have sufficient porosity and permeability for fluids to flow. Wells are spaced to drain different parts of the reservoir, and surface installations collect, separate and stabilize produced fluids before they are transported away.

Exploration and development

Exploration begins with geological and geophysical surveys, including seismic studies, to identify promising structures. Appraisal drilling defines the size and quality of the reservoir, after which development plans decide the number and type of production wells, roads, platforms and export routes. To exploit a field fully, operators map reservoir behavior and adapt well placement and production rates over time.

Production and recovery methods

Production follows stages commonly described as primary, secondary and tertiary recovery. Primary recovery uses natural pressure and artificial lift; secondary methods (for example, waterflooding) maintain pressure; tertiary or enhanced oil recovery adds thermal, chemical or gas injection to mobilize remaining oil. Fields can produce for decades, though recovery factors vary and rarely recover all in-place hydrocarbons.

Infrastructure, transport and impacts

Surface infrastructure ranges from onshore processing plants and storage tanks to offshore platforms and subsea systems. Collected oil and gas are moved through pipelines or by tanker to refineries and markets. Operations require attention to safety, environmental protection, spill prevention and eventual abandonment and site restoration. Regulatory oversight and technological advances shape modern field management.

Importance and notable facts

Oil fields are central to energy supply and petrochemical feedstocks, providing jobs and government revenue in producing regions. Their discovery and development have driven exploration technology and industry organization. While many large fields are world-famous, numerous smaller fields collectively contribute a substantial share of global production.
