North West is a landlocked province in the northern interior of South Africa. Its name is often given in local languages, for example Bokone Bophirima in Tswana, Leboya Bophirima in Southern Sotho and Leboa-Bodikela in Northern Sotho. The provincial capital is Mahikeng, while the largest urban centre is Klerksdorp.

Location and landscape

The province is adjacent to the international border with Botswana and lies west of Gauteng province. Its terrain is largely highveld and bushveld: rolling grasslands, rocky outcrops and stretches of savanna. Notable conservation areas and private reserves protect wildlife and attract tourism.

History and formation

The modern province was created after the end of apartheid through a reorganisation of former administrative regions and parts of the Bophuthatswana homeland. Its towns and settlements reflect a mixture of indigenous Tswana cultural roots, settler-era development and industrial growth tied to mineral extraction.

Economy and land use

Mining is a major activity, particularly platinum-group metals and other minerals, centered around towns such as Rustenburg and Klerksdorp. Agriculture — including maize, livestock and smallholdings — mixes with manufacturing and service sectors. Tourism around game reserves, including well-known parks and lodges, contributes to the local economy.

Administration, population and culture

Governance is organised through district and local municipalities. Major districts include Bojanala Platinum, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Ngaka Modiri Molema and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati. The population is culturally diverse but Tswana-speakers form a large group; Afrikaans and English are commonly used as lingua francas in commerce and government.

Places of interest and notes

  • Klerksdorp, an industrial and mining centre, is the largest city by urban footprint.
  • Mahikeng (formerly Mafikeng) serves as the political and administrative capital.
  • Popular wildlife destinations and private reserves support safaris and conservation tourism.
