Mahikeng (also spelled Mafikeng or historically Mafeking) is the capital city of South Africa's North West province. Located near the border with Botswana, it serves as a regional administrative and service centre and has a population in the order of a few hundred thousand. The city combines government offices, educational institutions and retail trade with surrounding agricultural districts.

History and name

The town grew as a frontier settlement in the nineteenth century and later became widely known in Britain and internationally because of the Siege of Mafeking during the Second Boer War. The relief of the siege made the place famous and left a legacy in popular culture. The modern name Mahikeng reflects the Setswana spelling and local usage; English and Afrikaans sources have also used Mafikeng or Mafeking at different times.

Geography, population and culture

Mahikeng lies on relatively flat highveld terrain and functions as a market and transport node for the surrounding agricultural region. The city is multilingual; Setswana is widely spoken alongside English and Afrikaans. A university campus and several cultural institutions serve residents and students from across the province and neighbouring areas.

Economy and institutions

The economy is centred on public administration, education, retail and services that support farming communities. Key institutions include provincial government departments, higher-education facilities and regional hospitals. Transport connections comprise regional roads and rail links and a nearby regional airport that link Mahikeng with other South African centres.
