Province in northeastern Iran with capital Bojnord. Formed from the historical Khorasan region in 2004, noted for diverse ethnic groups, mountainous landscapes, agriculture, and cultural heritage.

North Khorasan Province occupies a portion of northeastern Iran. Its Persian name appears as استان خراسان شمالی, and the provincial capital is Bojnord. The province was created when the larger Khorasan region was divided; it preserves much of the historical identity of Greater Khorasan while functioning as a modern administrative unit.

Geography and climate

The landscape combines mountains, high plains and river valleys. Ranges and foothills provide pastures and forested areas while rivers and seasonal streams feed agricultural land. Climate varies with elevation: winters can be cold in the highlands and summers warm on the lower plains. The province borders Turkmenistan to the north and connects to other Iranian provinces to the west and south.

Administrative structure and settlements

North Khorasan is divided into several counties and districts centered on towns such as Bojnord and Esfarayen. Urban centers serve as local hubs for commerce, education and government services, while smaller villages sustain traditional livelihoods. Transportation links connect the province to regional markets and to international border crossings.

Population, languages and culture

The population is ethnically mixed, including Persian-speaking groups alongside Kurdish, Turkic and Turkmen communities. Local dialects and languages coexist with standard Persian. Folklore, music, carpet-weaving and seasonal festivals reflect the province’s cultural diversity and rural traditions.

History and significance

As part of the historic Khorasan region, the area has long been a crossroads of trade and migration on routes that once linked Central Asia with the Iranian plateau. Successive empires and local dynasties have left archaeological remains and historical sites that attract scholarly interest and tourism.

Economy and environment

The local economy relies on agriculture, horticulture, livestock and artisanal crafts such as rug-making. Small-scale mining and light industry also contribute. Conservation efforts and protected areas aim to preserve native flora and fauna and to develop sustainable tourism around natural and cultural attractions.
