Overview
Athletics is the umbrella term for core competitive sports that test speed, endurance, strength and technique. It comprises events in which individuals or teams run, jump, throw or walk for performance measured by time, distance or height. The sport is practiced at recreational, scholastic, national and international levels and is a foundation of multi-sport competitions such as the Olympic Games.
Core disciplines and events
Traditionally, athletics is divided into several broad categories. Within each category there are many distinct events:
- Running: sprint, middle-distance, long-distance, relays and hurdles — the most visible track contests. See general running programs for technique and training.
- Jumping: long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault emphasizing speed, timing and body control. More on jumping techniques can be found through specialist resources.
- Throwing: shot put, discus, hammer and javelin, which evaluate strength, balance and release mechanics.
- Walking: race walking events governed by specific rules on contact and leg straightening over distances up to 50 km.
Major competition formats
Events are staged in several formats: track and field meetings, road races, cross country, and race walking competitions. Track and field meets group track events and field events at a stadium, while road running includes city marathons and shorter street races. Cross country takes place over varied terrain and weather, testing adaptability. Organized athletics events and circuits are often referenced collectively as athletics events in calendars and rankings.
Rules are set by international and national governing bodies, with standardized equipment, measured courses and officiating that ensure fair competition. Athletes compete in age and gender categories and may accumulate points, titles or records under sanctioned conditions.
Historically rooted in ancient contests but formalized in the 19th century, athletics remains central to physical education and elite sport. It produces widely recognized champions, iconic moments and easily comparable performances, which contribute to its global popularity and cultural importance.
