Overview

Athletics is a group of competitive sports built around fundamental human movements: running, jumping and throwing. In many countries the term is synonymous with track and field, which takes place on an oval track and an adjacent field. Other disciplines commonly included under athletics are road running, cross-country and racewalking. Events range from short sprints to long-distance races and from technical jumps and throws to combined multi-event competitions.

Core disciplines

Track events include sprints, hurdles, middle- and long-distance races and relays. Field events cover the high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, hammer and javelin. Combined events such as the decathlon and heptathlon test an athlete's versatility by combining multiple disciplines into a single competition. Road running and cross-country are held outside stadia and test endurance over varied terrain.

History and development

Many athletic contests trace back to ancient cultures; running and tests of strength were central to early festivals and games. Modern athletics developed alongside organized sporting clubs and national competitions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and became a central feature of international sporting gatherings, including the modern Olympic Games.

Competition and organization

At the international level athletics is governed by a global federation and by regional and national bodies that set rules, manage championships and certify records. Major competitions include world championships, continental championships and the athletics programme within multi-sport events. Standardized rules cover timing, measurement, equipment and anti-doping controls.

Importance and practice

Athletics is widely practiced at school and community level because its events require minimal equipment and emphasise physical literacy. It serves as a foundation for many other sports, promotes fitness and offers a clear pathway from grassroots participation to elite competition.

  • Road running: races on public roads, including marathons and shorter distances.
