The professional ice hockey team known as the Atlanta Thrashers was an National Hockey League franchise established as an expansion club in 1999 and based in Atlanta, Georgia. For its time in Atlanta the club played home games at Philips Arena and competed in the league for twelve seasons before being sold and relocated in 2011. The franchise participated in the league as part of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference.

Origins and team identity
The Thrashers were created as part of the NHL's late-1990s expansion into non-traditional hockey markets. Team identity emphasized a regional connection to the American South while adopting a bird-themed nickname and logo that featured prominently in marketing and merchandise. The club sought to build a local fanbase in a city with an established professional sports scene and to introduce ice hockey to new audiences.
On-ice performance and notable players
On the ice, the Thrashers experienced mixed results. The club qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs only once, in the 2006–07 season, and was eliminated in the opening round. Despite overall struggles, the franchise developed and featured several prominent players who are widely associated with the team, most notably forward Ilya Kovalchuk, who served as a long-time scoring leader and captain. The roster combined veteran signings with young draft picks as the organization attempted to build sustained competitiveness.
Ownership, business challenges and relocation
Attendance, arena economics and ownership issues were recurring challenges for the franchise. On May 31, 2011, a group led by True North Sports and Entertainment purchased the team; the sale received approval from the National Hockey League on June 21, 2011. Following the approved sale the franchise was relocated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, and rebranded as the modern Winnipeg Jets, bringing an NHL club back to that Canadian market.
Legacy
The Thrashers era is frequently cited in discussions about league expansion, market viability in the Sun Belt, and the importance of stable local ownership and suitable arena arrangements. While the team endured only a single playoff appearance, it played a role in expanding hockey exposure in the southeastern United States and produced players and moments remembered by fans.
