Atlanta United is owned by Arthur Blank, the businessman who also owns the NFL franchise the Atlanta Falcons and is widely known for co-founding a major home improvement retailer and investing in sports and community initiatives. The club played several matches at Bobby Dodd Stadium early in its inaugural season before moving to the newly completed Mercedes-Benz Stadium in August 2017, a large multi-purpose venue that it shares with the Falcons from the NFL.

Under its first head coach, Gerardo Martino, Atlanta United won the MLS Cup in 2018, marking one of the fastest trajectories from expansion side to league champion in MLS history.
