Neustadt an der Waldnaab is a Landkreis (rural district) in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. The district is named after its administrative centre, Neustadt an der Waldnaab, and takes its identity from the Waldnaab river and the surrounding forested hills. For official information see the district page: Neustadt an der Waldnaab.
Geography and natural character
The district lies in the Upper Palatine Forest (Oberpfälzer Wald), a low mountain range with extended woodlands, valleys and streams. Its landscape is characterized by mixed forests, meadows and small river valleys carved by the Waldnaab and its tributaries. The area borders other parts of the Upper Palatinate and approaches the Czech frontier, giving it a transitional character between Bavarian and Bohemian landscapes. The district forms part of the federal state of Bavaria.
History and administration
As a modern administrative unit the Landkreis reflects the historical evolution of Bavarian local government: medieval market towns and rural communities gradually were grouped into larger administrative districts. Over the 19th and 20th centuries, reforms altered boundaries and responsibilities; today the district is governed by an elected council and an executive district administrator responsible for local services, planning and cooperation between municipalities.
Economy, infrastructure and land use
The district economy is diverse and shaped by its natural setting. Forestry and agriculture make use of the rural landscape, while small and medium-sized enterprises provide manufacturing and services. Transport links are regional, with roads and rail lines connecting towns to larger urban centres; the local infrastructure supports both commuters and visitors.
- Forestry and wood-processing industries
- Agriculture and local food production
- Small industrial workshops and family businesses
- Outdoor and rural tourism (hiking, nature observation)
Culture, tourism and notable features
Local culture reflects Bavarian and Upper Palatinate traditions: village festivals, regional cuisine and dialects are common. The forested hills and river valleys attract walkers, cyclists and nature lovers; historical market towns and local museums illustrate rural life and regional history. The name itself—"New town on the Waldnaab"—highlights the close relationship between settlement and river.
Neustadt an der Waldnaab is part of the federal republic of Germany and contributes to the region's mix of natural environment, local industry and cultural heritage.
