Overview

A native species, often called an indigenous species, is one that occurs in a particular region or ecosystem as a result of natural processes rather than because of recent human activity. Definitions and scope

Definitions vary in time depth and context. Some treatments allow arrival by people centuries or millennia ago to be considered natural if subsequent ecological integration is complete; others use stricter criteria tied to documented human transport. The notion of nativity is applied to populations in the wild that reproduce and persist without cultivation or management and are not the product of deliberate artificial selection. The term connects a species to the prevailing natural environment rather than to changes driven by direct human action.

  • Endemic: restricted to a particular area; all endemics are native but not all natives are endemic.
  • Introduced (non-native): present because of human-mediated transport; may be harmless, naturalized, or invasive — see introduced species.

How nativity is inferred

Evidence comes from historical records, fossil or subfossil remains, genetic studies, and ecological context. Ecological roles and importance

Native species typically participate in coevolved interactions — pollination, seed dispersal, predator–prey dynamics, and nutrient cycling — that sustain ecosystems. They often provide habitat structure and food resources tuned to local conditions. The loss of native species can disrupt these processes and reduce resilience to disturbance.

Management, restoration and challenges

Conservation generally prioritizes native biodiversity through habitat protection, control of non-native invasives, and restoration using appropriate local genotypes or species assemblages. Contemporary challenges include climate-driven range shifts, historical baselines that are difficult to define, and debates over interventions such as assisted migration and rewilding when species cannot track rapid environmental change.
