Nagano Prefecture (長野県, Nagano-ken) is a landlocked prefecture on the main Japanese island of Honshu. It lies within the Chūbu region and forms part of central Japan. The prefectural capital is the city of Nagano. The area is known for its high mountains, inland climate, and a mix of rural communities and mid-sized urban centers.

Geography and climate

Nagano is dominated by mountain ranges commonly called the Japanese Alps: the Hida (Northern), Kiso (Central) and Akaishi (Southern) ranges. Much of the prefecture is forested and sits at relatively high elevation, producing large seasonal differences in temperature and substantial snowfall in alpine areas. Major rivers flow from these mountains across basins and valleys that support farming and transport routes.

History and culture

The region corresponds largely to the historic province of Shinano. It contains important cultural sites, notably Zenko-ji in Nagano city and Matsumoto Castle in Matsumoto city. Nagano hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics, which boosted the profile of its winter sports facilities and mountain tourism. Traditional crafts, local festivals, and soba (buckwheat) cuisine remain strong features of cultural life.

Economy and uses

Nagano's economy blends agriculture, light industry and tourism. The prefecture is famous for fruit production—especially apples and grapes—along with specialty crops like wasabi in certain valleys. Mountain resorts, onsen hot springs and hiking attract domestic and international visitors for both winter and summer recreation.

Transport and demographics

Railways and expressways connect Nagano's cities and valleys to neighboring prefectures and major urban centers. Like many inland regions of Japan, it faces demographic challenges including population aging and gradual decline in some rural districts, prompting local efforts to diversify industry and support community revitalization.
