Geography and landscape

The district lies within the Karakoram mountain system and features steep valley floors, alpine meadows, and glaciers feeding local rivers. Rakaposhi and nearby high summits dominate parts of the skyline, and several glaciers and mountain passes in the region are access points for trekking and mountaineering. The landscape creates microclimates that support terraced agriculture in valley bottoms and orchards on lower slopes.

History and administration

The area that is now Nagar District has a lengthy local history. For much of the late 19th and 20th centuries the valley was governed by local rulers under varying degrees of external influence. In the modern era administrative reforms altered the political structure: local princely authority was ended in the 1970s and the present district boundaries were formalized in 2015 when Hunza–Nagar was split into separate units.
