Mymensingh Division

Geography and environment

The division occupies a largely riverine plain crossed by major waterways, including branches of the Brahmaputra. Its landscape alternates between fertile floodplains used for intensive agriculture and low-lying wetland basins known locally as haors, which are seasonally inundated and important for fisheries and biodiversity. To the north the division borders India; the international boundary meets the state of India and its Meghalaya region. Internally, Mymensingh lies north of Dhaka Division, west of Sylhet Division, and east of parts of Rangpur and Rajshahi Division.

Administrative districts

The division was organized to unify several northern districts under a single administrative structure. These districts contain a mix of urban municipalities and rural upazilas (subdistricts). Local government offices coordinate services such as land administration, health, and education from district headquarters.

History and development

Mymensingh has a long history as a regional center of trade, agriculture and education. The division in its present form was created to improve administrative efficiency and bring government services closer to residents of the northern districts, which were previously administered from Dhaka. The city of Mymensingh itself grew during the 19th and 20th centuries as a commercial and cultural hub.

Economy and society

Agriculture is the dominant economic activity: rice, jute and assorted pulses and oilseeds are cultivated on the fertile floodplain soils. The haor wetlands support seasonal fisheries that contribute to food security and local incomes. The division is also noted for educational institutions, including specialized agricultural and general universities that serve the wider region, and for folk cultural traditions in music and crafts.

Transport, notable features and distinctions

Road and rail connections link Mymensingh to Dhaka and to neighboring divisions. Seasonal flooding and the haor ecology shape settlement patterns and livelihoods, creating distinctive environmental management challenges and opportunities for ecotourism. Administratively, the division provides a focus for regional planning and development distinct from the capital region, while its proximity to the Indian border adds cross-border geographic significance.
